Gidsy launching in NYC and Berlin

We’re excited to announce we will make our debut in the sister cities Berlin and New York, launching in both cities at once.photo: Energy Crisis in States | http://www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/4272469374/in/photostream/

Berlin and New York City are sister cities in many ways. Despite a 377-year age difference, many aspects of their personalities are similar. ”New York City is the prim and proper maiden, Berlin […] the slutty mistress,” wrote the Village Voice from New York once. Maybe that has changed, but they still have important similarities.

Fred Wilson, investor, once remarked that today’s Berlin “feels like New York ten years ago.” Parallels have been drawn between Mitte and Manhattan, Kreuzberg and Brooklyn. Both cities have a high density of creatives as well as hipsters with fixed-gear bikes, and have elaborate, colorful underground train networks. And more importantly, both cities both are packed with DIY-ers, entrepreneurs and other people who do interesting stuff.

They attract the full spectrum of personalities, from energetic startup folks to shiny diplomats to scantily clad party animals to aimless wanderers to gabby taxi drivers to artists, starving or otherwise. Both are places where anyone can find his niche.

If you take an interest in metropolitan trivia: Berlin is Bigger than New York is a joint effort from the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of World Cultures) and the Center for Metropolitan Studies at Berlin’s Technical University. It compares facts and figures from both cities across various dimensions.

We’re extremely excited to be launching soon. Both Berlin and New York City are among our favorite cities in the world, and we can’t wait to announce when we actually launch. But you’ll have to wait just a little bit for that…

Also, we’re looking for someone to help us out in NYC. If you know that person or are that person, come say hi.
