Hi Abby! Can you introduce yourself to everyone, and tell us more about how you got to Berlin?
I’m Abby, and I come from Atlanta, Georgia! I found out about Gidsy through my friend’s Tumblr about seven months ago. She mentioned cool start-ups in Berlin, and I checked out Gidsy and I thought it sounded really cool so I sent a message saying, you guys are awesome and I like you. I was really shocked to get a response back from Edial! I was like “Wow, the CEO wrote me back, that’s really cool”.
After graduation rolled around I saw that an internship was available, so I went for it. I didn’t have my interview until I arrived in Berlin, so I kind of had to take a leap of faith and just buy a one way ticket. I had a really good feeling about it, so I just went with it. That’s how I ended up here.
So what is your favorite thing about working at Gidsy so far?
It’s probably the typical answer, everyone says it in the team interview, but it’s the people. To me that’s huge in a company that I’m working with. Everyone’s really enthusiastic and passionate about what they’re doing. And they’re all just really smart, savvy people.
And what do you do here at Gidsy?
I’m working on the community management team! In a lot of ways it’s what I thought community management would be, and in a lot of ways it’s so much more. I get to come up with a lot of cool content for the blog, and keep up with our community via Twitter and Facebook, and and do lots of customer support. I basically keep an eye on the community and engage with them.
I heard you like to keep a journal - how long have you been writing in your journal, and why do you like doing it?
I have probably journaled since I was six or seven years old, when I first learned to read and write. Sometimes I feel like it doesn’t have that much value because I’m the only one who reads it, and it’s just all these pages of words. But, it’s just what kind of helps me be me. I think as I write. It’s part of who I am.
What’s the most memorable adventure you’ve ever been on?
I believe in making every day an adventure, first of all. That’s my philosophy in life and that’s really my biggest goal in life to just have adventure all around me. I think I’m on it right now, being in Berlin, this is what I’ve dreamed of since I was like five years old. I always knew that I wanted to go live abroad. I always wanted to travel and do big things and I’m one of the fortunate ones to actually be making my dreams happen. I’d say Berlin is my most memorable and best adventure.
So you are brand-new to Berlin - what you think about the city so far?
I think it’s really cool. It’s got kind of this grunge thing going for it. There’s the famous saying that it’s poor but sexy and I definitely think that’s true. One of my favorite curious little finds that I’ve discovered so far would be Mauerpark on Sundays. It’s obviously a favorite of many. I can’t believe that it’s part of my new home. Oh, and Tempelhof Airfield - it’s so amazing. When I went there for the first time I just rode around on my bike screaming, “I love Berlin!” Seriously.
What’s something that you’d like to see on Gidsy?
Piñata making workshop. A party really isn’t a party without a piñata. I know they’re fairly simple to make, but I attempted a heart shaped one for Valentine’s Day and it was a failed attempt. I’d love to learn from a piñata master.
What are you reading right now?
Right now I’ve started, “Midnight’s Children” by Salman Rushdie.
Thanks so much for chatting, Abby!
